Colour of the year 2007

70RR 54/153

Pink is now being used in innovative new ways to create the most adventurous of modern interiors. It is now liberated from historic and cultural association and has evolved into a colour with an original expression of character. It is the colour of choice for cutting edge designers and decorators wishing to create a sophisticated atmosphere

During this past century many cultures considered pink to be both a feminine and romantic shade. It was frequently associated with girls’ clothing, sugary confectionary and cosmetics. The packaging of these items likewise reflected this dreamy image and often incorporated the use of pink flower blossom and petals – this viewpoint has now been totally reassessed.

This particular shade contains a degree of greyness which gives it its elegant and sophisticated character, especially when combined and contrasted with black, darkest browns or cool greens. It appeals to both feminine and masculine personalities conjuring up images of smart Burberry checks or Argyle sweaters, pinstriped suits accessorised with pink silk handkerchiefs, fine porcelain or retro automobiles and scooters.

Leading designers are using pink for the latest hotel, restaurant and interior projects. Plastic and Perspex furniture, avant garde glass and china, exquisite chandeliers and furnishing fabrics are all to be found in this unexpected but highly desirable colour. Pink is, at last, being seen for its everlasting beauty and remarkable versatility – a truly worthy renaissance of a colour so long constrained.
